Global Competency
Global Competency is an important attribute students should develop in order to be responsible global citizens. Global Competency was defined by the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) as the ability "...not only to contribute to knowledge, but also to comprehend, analyze and evaluate its meaning in the context of an increasingly globalized world." In order to view society in a global way, students should explore each of these areas in depth. By gaining knowledge and increasing understanding, students can challenge themselves to be better leaders.
A great way to get started learning more about global competency is to use your campus resources. Many schools have departments, campus groups and activities that can help you develop a better understanding of why being globally competent is important.
Cultural Competency
"Cultural Competency is defined as integrating the following into an institution's cultural fabric: awareness, attitude, knowledge and skills surrounding different racial and ethnic groups." (Mercedes Martin & Billy Vaughn (2007). Strategic Diversity & Inclusion Management magazine, pp. 31-36. DTUI Publications Division: San Francisco, CA.).
The following resources can help you explore cultural competency. They can help you explore why this concept is important and can challenge you to be part of a culturally competent institution and society.
